Starting
in Antarctica, an international team of young adults will embark on one of the most
arduous and ambitious treks ever undertaken.
A journey with a mission,
Pole to Pole 2005 is a call to action inspiring youth and adults throughout
the world to reach out, take initiative and be involved as world citizens.
Starting in January 2005
this journey will originate at the South Pole and travel north 25,000 miles
through the continents of Antarctica, Africa, Europe, and the ArticOcean to the North Pole. The
journey will take over fifteen months.
The Pole to Pole Team2005 consists of young adults from countries across the globe: Canada,
South Africa, England, Japan, France, the United States, Germany and China
Along the way the members of
Team2005 will assist on, and learn from, local humanitarian,
environmental and sustainable economic development projects.
Team2005 will also make hundreds of presentations to schools and community
groups on their route providing practical examples from their own experiences of
how people bring out the best in each other, what solutions other communities
have created, how every person can be involved, and the benefits of working
together to seek solutions.
During presentations Team
2005 members will invite their audiences to pledge a shared vision of world
harmony in action, by writing down their personal action pledges and entrusting
them to the expedition. The team will take these symbols of personal commitment,
and bring them to their final destination, the North Pole, to show the world
that individuals can really make a difference.
Through the scope and reach
of information technology billions of people will have the opportunity to
participate in the Pole to Pole journey via internet sites, documentaries
and news coverage over the course of the expedition. They will also have the
opportunity of meeting or joining the team at predetermined event sites.
Pole to Pole 2005 was conceived of by world- renowned expedition leader Martyn Williams,
the first man in history to lead successful treks to the three great extremes in
the world: the North Pole, the South Pole and Mount Everest. In 2000 Martyn Williams trained
and led the first international team of youth on Pole to Pole 2000 from
the North Pole, through the Americas to the South Pole. To learn more about Pole
